Anesthesia is in this family’s blood: father, two children all working as nurse anesthetists at Vanderbilt

Their family routine has shifted from preparing school lunches and reviewing homework to preparing operating rooms and monitoring patients before, during and after surgery. Brian Reid, certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and his two children, Chris Reid and Mary Case, both CRNAs, now work together in the Department of Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
On a typical day, the three arrive at the Vanderbilt Outpatient Surgery Center on the main campus. They greet their coworkers, begin to set up their respective operating rooms, and take time to visit before cases start.

VUMC Department of Anesthesiology impacts the 2023 American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting

Members of Vanderbilt’s Department of Anesthesiology impacted the sights and sounds of the latest advances in anesthesiology during the recent 2023 American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in San Fransisco.
The conference included hundreds of presentations from scholars around the country, many networking opportunities, and hands-on workshops that members of the department facilitated and attended, including participation in more than 65 activities as authors, presenters or moderators.

Wood County Marine Corps League lays wreaths on veterans’ graves

In Wood County hundreds of wreaths were placed on the graves of veterans at Roselawn Cemetery this morning. The Wood County Marine Corps League, along with many volunteers were able to lay all 677 wreaths as a way to remember their sacrifices and educate younger generations.
Kelly Kieke placed a wreath on her aunt Mozelle Simpson’s grave at Roselawn Cemetery as a way to honor her.

East Texan carves and paints wooden Santa Clauses to spread joy

One East Texan has found his purpose through carving, and not just any carving, but hand carving wooden Santa Clauses in an effort to spread Christmas joy.
Marvin Melton, who’s claimed the title, Santa Carver, and his four-legged helper, Noel, head into his shop. Frosted windows, lights, and Christmas music make this place his winter wonderland.

East Texas neighborhood supporting cyclists with popsicles, cold water, encouragement

One East Texas neighborhood has taken the initiative to support local cyclists through encouraging words, hydration, and friendship.
Every Tuesday, just before 7 p.m., those in the Briarcrest neighborhood start heading to their neighbor Hazel’s yard. Some people bring lawn chairs, others ice. It’s for their own fellowship, but they also share popsicles with those who come through their neighborhood by way of bicycle.

Kacey Musgraves’ family, friends proud of ‘our girl,’ in Time Magazine’s Women of the Year issue

An East Texas native who grew up in Golden and graduated from Mineola High School is one of 12 selected for TIME Magazine’s “Women of the Year” list.
Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Kacey Musgraves is the newest face on TIME Magazine for their “Women of the Year” edition. TIME said, “creating a better future for women means building bridges—across generations, communities, and borders. These extraordinary leaders are working toward a more equal world.” Barbara Musgraves, Kacey’s grandmother, said she is very proud of her.
