Looking for a part-time or full-time job?
I HAVE THE ANSWER GUYS!
Stop what you're doing, pop into your local Trader Joe's, ask for an application, fill that out as soon as possible and get ready for one of the most genuine interview processes. (And if you're in the KC area, go to the Ward Parkway one!)
This is what I did, sort of unintentionally a few weeks ago. I went in for their sweet potato chips, some granola bars and fried rice. THREE people tried to help me and I thought, "Wow, this is next level customer service." I didn't really need help until they had two places for granola bars and I was in the wrong section. I timidly asked one of the employees for help and right away he was willing to help! Detour... WHY are we so shy to ask employees for help? That's literally their job?
Anyway, he led me to the other section they were in (if you're curious we've got them in the cereal isle and heath and beauty). Then another guy was over there restocking and having fun while doing it. I decided to interact with him, because he seemed to like what he was doing we he told me the granola bars he thought were good and visa versa. I thought, "Wow, I want to work with these people." (AHHHH now I do!)
My third moment of customer service amazement was at the register. First the girl's name was also Erin, so the stars were totally in alignment. She was friendly and genuinely engaging with me. As she handed me my receipt I asked if they were hiring and she said they always are and to talk to one of the mates. (Stores have one captain -- they oversee the entire store and mates who oversee the crew members.)
I took an application, turned it in the next day and a few days later was schedule for an interview. When I went in for the interview I stopped by the demo station, was offered a cup of coffee and a sample. Both of which I was too nervous to accept. Yeah, me, nervous about a customer service job, funny.
Anyway I made it through the first round, the second round was similar to the first. I sat with two mates and we just talked about me. My past, my interests and why I chose to apply. Here's where I get chills in my TJ's story. When they asked how former co-workers might describe me I said that I bring and energy and enthusiasm to the jobs I'm at... well three days in at this job and that was noticed. At 10 p.m. we have a team huddle where we talk about the day and some store notes. We also give shoutouts. One of the guys I was training with shouted me out for being "really enthusiastic" about the tasks we were doing. As well as being attentive to customers and their needs, which is our goal.
I don't know you guys, it just feels good to have been able to warm up so soon here and really be myself. It's fun, it's a lot of customer interaction and it's a strong support system. People are genuine, people truly come from all walks of life and are of all ages. It really feels like its' own little world some days and anyone who comes in is welcome.
With all this said, I HIGHLY recommend even just shopping at Trader Joe's because it's more than a grocery trip, it's a positive experience. We do what we can to bring you out of your normal grocery shopping routine and into the fun of the store. The other day I was working in wine. To make it fun some co-workers and I were making jokes and a customer was laughing along and said, "You guys are having too much fun." It's a good place to work and the fun doesn't end.
We always have samples and want you to try the product before you buy it. We want you to taste food and wine you wouldn't always purchase. By doing this, we hope you find your new favorite item, share it with friends and continue coming back.
To my KC friends, thanks to those who have already dropped in :), come on out and let's get you some good food, at a great price and fun experience!
